From Tony Jauncey: "Tonbridge club in Judd Street was founded after WW2 by a local vicar for the boys of King's Cross and surrounding area, to get them off the street and channel their energy into worthwhile pursuits. I used to attend there in the late 60s and early 70s to practice karate. I studied under Tataso Suzuki, one of the first Japanese masters to come to this country. I remember that it had a very antiquated gym, with several boxing rings."
The building was disused for some years but in Summer 2007 it reopened, after a refurbishment, as a health and creative arts centre run by Central YMCA, the target audience being the local young people so - a return to its original function.
JUDD
Tonbridge School is a public school(English fee-charging boarding and day school for boys aged 13–18) in Tonbridge, Kent, England, founded in 1553 by Sir Andrew Judde(sometimes spelt Judd). It is a member of the Eton Group and has close links with the Worshipful Company of Skinners, one of the oldest London livery companies.
Sir Andrew Judde, or Judd, was born before February, 1492, in Tonbridge, Kent, the third son of John Judde, (d. 1493), gentleman, and Margaret, daughter of Valentine Chiche.[1][2] His mother was the granddaughter of an earlier Lord Mayor of London, Robert Chichele, and great-niece of Henry Chichele, Archbishop of Canterbury, and William Chichele, Sheriff of London.[3]He left for London and apprenticed with the Skinners Company; he was later the master of the company for four terms. He accumulated a large fortune, part of which he used to establish Tonbridge School in his home town. During his career as a merchant, he personally travelled to Russia, Spain, and the coast of Africa.
Skinners
The Skinners' Company is a prominent educational and charitable institution, particularly known for its strong connection to Tonbridge School and other schools in the West Kent area. It's one of the "Great Twelve" Livery Companies of London, with a history dating back around 700 years. The Company is involved with several schools, including Tonbridge School, The Judd School, and The Skinners' Kent Academy, among other
